CROWN OIL BASE
Product Code: 049230

Description

Crown Trade Wood Primer (Solvent-Based)

Crown Trade Wood Primer is a high-quality, solvent-based (oil-based) primer specifically formulated for preparing new or bare interior and exterior timber surfaces. It creates an essential foundation layer that enhances the adhesion of subsequent undercoats and topcoats, ensuring a long-lasting and professional finish. This primer is designed to seal porous wood, prevent absorption of topcoats, and offer excellent stain-blocking properties, particularly against tannins and resins found in certain woods, thereby minimizing discoloration. Its traditional formulation ensures deep penetration and a robust base for the paint system.

Features

  • Excellent Adhesion: Provides a strong bond to bare wood surfaces, ensuring subsequent paint layers adhere securely and prevent peeling or flaking.
  • Sealing Properties: Effectively seals porous wood, preventing excessive absorption of undercoats and topcoats, which helps achieve a uniform finish and reduces paint consumption.
  • Stain Blocking: Good at isolating and preventing stains from wood resins and tannins from bleeding through subsequent paint layers, particularly on knotty or resinous timbers (though for severe bleeding, a specialized Aluminium Wood Primer might be recommended).
  • Promotes Durability: Creates a stable base that contributes to the overall longevity and protective qualities of the entire paint system.
  • Interior and Exterior Use: Versatile for preparing wood surfaces both inside and outside the property.
  • Good Sandability: Dries to a surface that is easy to sand, allowing for a perfectly smooth base for the next coat.
  • Traditional Solvent-Based Formula: Offers reliable performance and compatibility with traditional solvent-based undercoats and topcoats.

Applications

Crown Trade Wood Primer (Solvent-Based) is essential for preparing:

  • New or Bare Interior Woodwork: Doors, architraves, skirting boards, window frames, and other interior timber elements before applying an undercoat and topcoat.
  • New or Bare Exterior Woodwork: External doors, window frames, fascia boards, and other timber exposed to the elements, as part of a solvent-based paint system.
  • Resinous or Knotty Woods: While providing some stain blocking, it's a good general primer for such woods before a dedicated stain block if needed.
  • Any Wood Surface: Where a durable, traditional primer is preferred to ensure optimal adhesion and finish of solvent-based topcoats.

Important Note: As this is a solvent-based product, it will have a distinct odour during application and drying, and typically requires longer drying times than water-based primers (recoatable after 16 hours). Tools will need to be cleaned with white spirit or brush cleaner. If you are using water-based topcoats, it is generally recommended to use a compatible water-based primer/undercoat (like Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Primer Undercoat) for best system compatibility.
